91ƬC is hosting One Day Workshop on “Teaching Business Ethics” on 29 May 2015
The Work Shop
The workshop is designed to develop teaching acumen in business ethics for young faculties and to be faculties in management institutes. The focus of the workshop will center on the deliberation of the challenges ranging from curriculum design to effective delivery with special emphasis on teaching methodology. The design of the management curriculum presents a special challenge to teaching ethics. The curriculum is mostly responsible for creating a false perception about what it means to be ethical. Being ethical is considered as either unprofitable in business and/or would require sacrificing of personal gains. Another challenge comes from the world view of ethical relativism which flourishes with the ideologies of liberalism and post colonialism. A further possible challenge is the perspective that ethics is a Western imposition on academic curricula in developing countries.
Themes
This workshop would provide the participants the tools to surf through these challenges and deliver ethics in more effective manner to students and also drive their commitments to ethical decision making.
Organizer
Prof. Nisigandha Bhuyan, Business Ethics and Communication Group, 91Ƭ
Her research and teaching experience (ISB Hyderabad, The Wharton School, 91Ƭ Kozhikode, 91Ƭ Ranchi, 91Ƭ Raipur and 91Ƭ) has exposed her to the challenges of teaching ethics to management students. She is motivated by these challenges to organize various workshops and training programmes for fresh teachers and to be teachers to facilitate effective teaching of ethics. There may be other professed speakers in the field.
Who can participate?
The workshop has been designed keeping in mind the value of business ethics course and the significance of an ethics professor in educational environments that is subsumed by the hegemony of functional subjects in management. Along with the organizer there may be other professed speakers of the subject with a prolific and challenging research and teaching background. The participants, teaching ethics in such environments, or research scholars aspiring to be teachers, would greatly benefit through their formal/informal peer interactions and experience sharing. The workshop model of interaction between speakers and participants provides far greater space for dialogue between heterogeneous audiences, but with similar questions, problems, experiences, and interests. This is an earnest attempt to explore the possibilities of bettering the research and pedagogy of ethics in management schools. For the sake of effectiveness, the maximum number of participant is only 30 and based on selection by the organizer. Registration fee is refundable for not-selected participants. Participants who are nominated by the head of the institution may get preference. The confirmation of participation will be sent as soon as possible.
