Speaker: Dr. Viral V Acharya, C V Starr Professor of Economics at the Department of Finance, New York University Stern School of Business.

Dr. Acharya served as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India during 23rd January 2017 to 23rd July 2020. He will share his experiences as a central banker as gathered in his forthcoming book "Quest for Restoring Financial Stability in India", SAGE Publishing. Dr Acharya will offer the perspectives he gathered on the causes, consequences, and remedies of the increasing dominance of financial sector and central banking outcomes by India's growing fiscal deficit. His talk will cover the following four topics:

  1. Restoring financial stability - Resolution of non-performing assets and under-capitalized banks
  2. Improving information infrastructure - Setting up a Public Credit Registry
  3. Establishing viable capital markets to improve monetary policy transmission and external sector resilience
  4. Aspiring for the right balance between the government, the central bank, and the markets.

Dr Acharya will engage in a Q&A post the talk.
